They were even being produced as early as WWI. They are pictured on the cover of the 1939 Der Sportler catalog.

Loose fit soft cotton
It's true to size for a lose fit. I usually swim in normal size shirts but hate buying kids size because they are so boxy. I am 5 foot tall and 105lbs. The xs fits very nicely. The color is rich and fabric soft.
