The pads are a silicone rubber and just the right balance of soft vs. stiff so they are comfortable and keep their shape. They also have small vent holes which helps them conform. This is an excellent case for the current version IPad. It offers excellent all around protection. Additionally, the case has a built in spot for the IPad pencil.
